From Hudiksvall to Penang – William to lead development team in Malaysia
In a Monitor career spanning 10 years, William Colling has done most things in the field of system development. He’s now looking forward to fresh challenges at Monitor’s subsidiary in South-East Asia. “I mentioned I was interested in working abroad when I had my first job interview. If you’re clear about what you want, things normally work out at Monitor.”
William Colling started working for Monitor around 10 years ago. Joining the company straight from university and a two-year distance course in web development, he began by working on development of Monitor’s mobile application.
“I’d heard a lot of good things about the company, and above all, the bonus system. I grew up just outside Hudiksvall, so this is home turf for me. I sent in an open application, and things went from there,” said William.
As well as the mobile app, he’s worked on the development of various customizations, web shops, and several of Monitor’s standard products, handling both front- and backend development.
In the spring of 2020 it was confirmed that Wille would take over as Development Team Leader for Monitor Malaysia, that is, heading up Monitor’s team of developers based in Penang, Malaysia.
“I traveled to Malaysia last fall to work in the office there for three months, and really enjoyed it. After almost nine years at Monitor, I was ready to try something new.”
He’s looking forward to the challenge of leading a team, and the opportunity to have a greater influence on development than he did before.
"My advice is to be clear about what you want, and things will normally work out at Monitor.”
Providing career paths within the company is an important way for Monitor to continue to be an attractive employer, and working overseas had long been a goal for William.
“I mentioned I was interested in working abroad when I had my first job interview. The right type of position had never been available before, but when this chance came along, I grabbed it with both hands. My advice is to be clear about what you want, and things will normally work out at Monitor.”
Besides the development team, the Malaysia office is also home to a support unit, sales representatives and consultants as well as a communication and marketing department.
“After the short time I was based in Malaysia I really understood why we decided to start up here – there seems to be enormous potential. We offer the best ERP system, and with a strong local identity I think we can steal a march on the competition and become market leaders here too.”
Why should a developer choose to work at Monitor?
“You’ll belong to a great team, and have excellent benefits. Monitor has modern, newly built offices, and you really have the chance to learn a lot. As a developer in the adaptation department you play a part in the full development process of customization and standard products – from specification to delivery to the customer.”
